Roxy Music fans…what do you think of these guys…’Random Hold’ ?

Random Hold were a cool UK band that existed in the late 70’s-early 80’s. They sort of had one foot stuck in 70s progressive rock, and the other foot in the late 70s new wave thing I guess…
The prog connection here is of course bassist ‘Bill MacCormick’, who had played with the Canterbury style prog band ‘Quiet Sun’, as well as with ‘Phil Manzanera’s ‘801′ of Roxy Music fame.
Bills solid bass lines really give this band a great sound.
Van der Graff Generator’ frontman Peter Hammill produced their first album, ‘The View From Here’ in 1980.
The vocalist name is Random Hold, and at times he reminds me of slightly more masculine Brian Eno, Lol…
I thought I’d share this band with you guys, and figured fans of Roxy Music might enjoy them, as the influence is apparent.
What are thoughts…do you like them?

Hey SKY…glad you liked them. I was thinking of mentioning David Rhodes, David Ferguson, and Pete Phipps…but I’m not writing a bio…Lol…not quite anyways :)
David V – Thanks! As you know, one of the best things about this section is being able to share music with one another…and I’ve always loved doing that! :)

    Hey Smiley,

Cool band! The tunes and production are right in pocket with the era.

I’ve got this thing for wanting to know about bands’ histories and stuff so I had to go read up on them. Their story is really quite interesting.

You know, the early years, how they got signed, recording ‘Etceteraville’ in Ringo’s Startling Studios (which was built in the same room where Lennon wrote Imagine), the "Gabriel" connection and how well R.H. was treated by Peter while touring with him and finally their breakup and demise.

I also find it amusing that you left out the name "David Rhodes" within the text of your question. (:

    Perty cool stuff.

    edit:

    WHAT….no bio? pffffft!
    - rolls eyes, throws computer down flight of stairs, calls Bono –
    LOL…..(:

p.s. I will give a better answer when I am a bit more sober.

Hey Smiley, I will definitely check them out when I get home from work =)

EDIT-I totally dig these guys. They have that early British New Wave feel to them. Forgive me for saying this but I havnt heard a lot of Roxy Music songs but they, music wise, remind me of "Split Enz" and the way the singer talks his singing (if that makes sense) reminds me of a band but I cant remember who.

Hey! I’ve only checked out the first 2 songs so far, but from what I see they seem pretty good. I like Etceteraville.

    Thanks for sharing.
    =)

Well I had heard these guys once before, when you kindly recommended them to me. I agree as I can definitely hear the similarity to early Roxy Music the rhythm and general structure of the songs also.
I love the music very, very much….sort of mysterious and haunting, but at the same time so urban ( that is another thing similar to Roxy Music), some of it also reminiscences early Genesis don’t you think?
Alas…… I must confess, the voice of the singer makes the experience a bit less perfect. He is a bit too "karaoke" to me. My skin does not react positively to him ( you know me,…no goosebumps….no thrill :) ).

    I like the songs
    Montgomery Clift
    The Ballad
    Avalanche
    What happened.

I left a comment on most of them……:)

    Thanks Prof. Dr,. Smiley !

    Hey, Smiley!

These were cool. They definitely have a New Wave vibe to them and I agree that the vocals are reminiscent of Brian Eno.

I never heard of them until now but I enjoyed them a lot.
Since I’m a big fan of Roxy Music it figures that I would like them. You’re correct on the Roxy Music similarity. The vocalist sounds very much like Bryan Ferry, and the music does too.
I liked Montgomery Clift the best out of those links.
The band name is pretty cool too.

    Thanks for posting!
