When my great-great grandfather first went to South Africa as a blacksmith, he lived in a tent. He built a foundry (the Boer blew it up) but made his fortune on the reefs. He endured endless hardships and a war and by all accounts never complained, although he did not have a high opinion of Oom Paul…. LOL!!!
Anyway, instead of doomsaying and moaning, where has our pioneer spirit gone? A fuel crisis and we are all whinging.I am sure the old generation would have just kept quiet and gone out and bought a generator.
Has the modern generation (regardless of race or origins) gone soft? Have we become spoilt by a way of life that is superficial and also is leading to the destruction of the planet?

Pioneer Spirit has gone in South Africa?
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010RV batteries, generators and solar panels?
Monday, February 8th, 2010I have a question that is probably so basic that is why nobody has covered it. Everytime I mention generators being loud and not campground friendly they boast that the new models are quieter…quieter maybe but noise is noise non-the less and it’s not a road I’m willing to go down…ever!
That leaves solar and battery banks right? I currently have 2 batteries and starting comparing prices on solar and it’s still quite expensive. Up here in the north a decent solar setup will still run you in excess of 0 CDN. A sealed battery for my RV is just about 0 so I’m wondering how much bang for my buck I’ll be getting by adding new batteries? How many batteries are overkill…is there such a thing as too many? I understand the virtues of solar but what I don’t have is information about battery banks?
Unhappy resident question…..Is resident wrong, or is it the landlord?
Monday, February 8th, 2010OK. I work at one of the nicest complexes in town. Top 3. Very beautiful, high end clients, high rents, right off of a lake, gated, etc. The third Thurs of every month, Papa Johns Pizza does an apartment night for us and does buy one get one free. This month, they did a mobile unit that passed out pizzas. You cant get this deal anywhere else. They set up a small trailer decorated with Papa johns logo. They had a loud generator set up to keep the warming thing hot they put the pizzas in. That was the only negative I saw, cuz it was very loud. But it was before our quiet hours. Well, we got a message from a resident saying that if he wanted to live next to a fast food resturant, that he would have done it and basically he didnt like them on them on the property. I think thats selfish, because its only one night a month. For about three hours. It wasnt near his building, but it was at the mailboxes. I just think its nice for resident appreciation once a month. Thoughts from others?
Yes, it is a great idea. It makes residents feel special and lets them know they get a deals for living here. And it truly was not near his building. He lives at the exact very end, the trailer was at the exact middle at mail boxes.
The reason I mentioned that it was high end is to show what kind of residents we have and this man might be and how, if at all, it may look ‘not proper’ to have a pizza "station" set up in the middle of the property for 3 hours.
Let me add again, that was NOT near his building, or even visible/audioable from his building. He just drove past it when coming in. If 5 seconds of a generator bothers him, then wow.
Charging things on a bus.?
Sunday, February 7th, 2010I have an iPhone that I want to take on an 8-9 hour bus trip with me I plan to use it for a while and was wondering if there are AC outlets on charter buses usually or where I can find a quiet sorta like low profile generator to take with me and charge it, and help?
Do you have any ideas or suggestions on names for these people?
Saturday, February 6th, 2010I’m writing a story, and I’m having problems deciding on names for these characters! It’s driving me mad! I’ve done tones of name generators, and have three baby name books, but it’s still diffulcult. I decided I’d ask the general public for help.
Here are the people. I’ll give what they look like, and some quick personality traits.
-This woman is twenty-two years old, and has brown, curly hair. She’s charming, quiet, and a big worrier.
-This man is also twenty-two, has shaggy blonde hair, and blue eyes. He’s easy to get along with, and a hard-worker type.
-This man has jet black hair, and is stuck up.
Please help! I know, who cares right? Just one suggestion is fine!
I’d also rather have unusual names, compared to commen ones!
Why don’t small engines, like in lawn mowers, have better mufflers to make them quieter?
Friday, February 5th, 2010Why is it that all of those small internal combustion engines, like the ones on lawn mowers, pressure washers, generators, ATVs, and outboard boat motors have such tiny mufflers and make so much noise? I especially wish the lawn equipment was quieter–the noise can ruin a nice day. Why not just put on a bigger muffler like a car has to reduce the noise? Even just a few decibles quiter would be nice!
Gas vs Propane Generator?
Thursday, February 4th, 2010Regarding portable for emergency backup during power outages, in order to run small appliances and charge frig/freezers…
What are the benefits of Propane vs Gas?
Is one quieter than the other?
Is propane easier to start?
Thanks

battery drain?
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010i have a 13 inch tv/vcr and a playstation 2 plugged into a 700 watt power inverter. although i have no problems powering them up, i can only get about 45 minutes of use before my battery is drained in my car. is there any way i can avoid this battery drain or is there any way i can hook it up to where i don’t use my battery, like some kind of quiet generator like they use in motorhomes. i also plan on getting satellite tv if that’s possible in my car.
I am a name generator! Just tell me your 1st, middle, and last name!?
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010Tell me your first, middle, and last name, and I will turn it into something cool or unusual. (With something my uncle made online!) Also tell me if you are a boy or girl, and if you are:
Friendly, Quiet, or Wild.
What kind of generator should I get?
Monday, February 1st, 2010I’m looking into purchasing a generator for my on location photo shoots, but I don’t know which to purchase. I almost bought an Alien Bees generator because it had great reviews, but then I saw some complaints about compatibility.
I’m looking for a generator with at least two sockets to plug into with my umbrella lights (continuous lights) and/or the softbox light I’m investing in soon after. I’d like to keep the price below 0, but preferably around 0 and I’d like it to be quiet. I do believe I need anywhere between 2,000-3,000 Watts of power.
No, I don’t have a preference on gas or electric generators, so post both!
troy built generators compared to wheelhouse generators?
Monday, February 1st, 2010The wheelhouse generator that homedepot is selling has good customer ratings except for the noise level. Does anyone know if the troybuilt generators are quieter.
Do you care when people run their generators at campgrounds?
Monday, February 1st, 2010Last time I went camping, the people ran their generator all day long. I did tune it out, but there were times when I really wanted to listen to the nature and quiet. That didn’t happen.
Hubby wants to buy a generator and I am refusing. I don’t think we need it. The fridge and lights on the travel trailer should work off the battery, shouldn’t it? Should I relent and let hubby get the generator?
No output power on a honda generator em-5000-ex?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010I HAVE PUT A NEW STATOR IN AND NO LUCK? THIS UNIT WAS DROPPED OF A TRUCK BRAND NEW AND THE ONLY SIGN OF DAMAGE WAS THE FRAME. THE MOTOR POWERS UP AND RUNS VERY QUIET ONLY ONE PULL AND IT STARTS. I HAVE CHECKED ALL THE BREAKERS AND ANY BLOWN FUSES CUT WIRES ETC. I WAS ASSUMING THAT YOU COULD MEASURE THE VOLTAGE RIGHT AT THE OPENING TO THE STATOR AND WAS NOT SEEING ANY AC OR DC CURRENT. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED. I GOT THE UNIT FOR 300.00 AND I THINK IT RETAILS FOR OVER 2700.00. SURE WOULD BE NICE TO FINALLY COME ACROSS A DEAL.
THANKS, PAUL
I have a Honda em xb 5 hp gc160 generator. Is there a quieter muffler I can purchase and install my self ?
Friday, January 29th, 2010Has anyone used a gas generator with an electric trolling motor?
Thursday, January 28th, 2010I have a 12′ jon boat and an electric trolling motor but no battery. I’m thinking of 2 options to power the trolling motor:
1) DEEP CYCLE BATTERY
- conventional option
- expensive (need to buy battery, charger, battery monitor)
- heavy (long lasting battery weigh 70lb+)
- limited time of use (should only use battery up to 50% of charge)
- quiet
2) GAS GENERATOR
- unconventional
- not as expensive (less then 0 for 1000W generator)
- not as heavy (around 50lb)
- unlimited time of use (just add gas)
- noisy (60db – same level of noise as normal conversation)
Any thoughts, comments, opinions?

will small engine be affected by using a bigger car type muffler?
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010I want to quiet a generator, and am able to fabricate anything out of steel. Will this shorten the life of the motor or have other effects on engine life?
Its an Briggs and Stratton OVH about 6.5 HP, and it has a flat spark arrestor muffler, its just way too loud.
i have a guardian 15000 watt portable generator. it is way to loud, will a different muffler make it quieter?
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010Is there a way to have a power generator that can handle four plugs yet be entirely silent?
Monday, January 25th, 2010And is gas powered the only option? Or is there something quieter?
Looking to purchase a Generator – solar/battery powered, preferably a combination – plug-in backup power.?
Sunday, January 24th, 2010I am looking for a self-recharging, always PLUGGED-IN BACKUP POWER (quiet running) GENERATOR. Automatically kicks on when power goes out and shuts off on return. A combination of solar/battery cells is preferrable but would consider alternatives if available. It is to be used in africa, the electricity is 220V. Also, the cost should not be prohibitive. Thanks in advance.
