A wave with amplitude of 2 mm constructively interferes with one of amplitude 3 mm. What is the amplitude of the resulting wave?
A. 0.67 mm
B. 1.5 mm
C. 1 mm
D. 5 mm

Two waves meet and cancel each other out. You can deduce that the two waves had equal amplitudes.
True or False?

The wavelength of light from a HeNe laser is 6.33 x 10-7 m. If the frequency of the light from the laser is 4.74 x 1014 Hz, find the speed of light. Express the answer in scientific notation with the proper number of significant digits.
A. 3.0042 x 108 m/s
B. 3.00 x 108 m/s
C. 3.0 x 108 m/s
D. 3.004 x 108 km/s

In the 1950’s people in outlying communities often put up antennas to catch TV waves from a distant transmitter. Oftentimes they discovered that by moving the antenna from side to side or at a different angle, they could find areas of better reception. Which of the following is a likely explanation for their experience?
A. transmitters were moving
B. TV sets did not work well
C. weather was affecting the TV waves
D. there were areas of constructive and destructive interference

Many places that require a quiet atmosphere use "white noise" generators. These are sound generators that issue sound in the range of frequencies most commonly found in background noise, such as those generated by cars. The white noise makes the area quieter by
A. setting up a phased array of sound waves.
B. constructively interfering with the background noise.
C. destructively interfering with the background noise.
D. setting up a "sound shield" against background vibrations.

Is the internet a good place to start a political revolution?

November 22nd, 2010

I am formerly announcing my run for President of The United States of America.
Here is who I am: I am an artist , American Born ,over 35,Honorably discharged veteran of US Navy.
Here is what I am for: (My Platform)
The establishment of another branch of GOVT. to deal with war on energy,"The Energy Force"- To be equal in power to existing branches of armed forces.
This new force will be tasked with and funded to convert our nation to a "greener" place. (once operational, designed to be self-funding)EX:
Construction of alternative energy stations nationwide (conversion of existing service stations using oil)Collection of revenues from Green Energy will be The Energy Force’s Job.
All US held automobile manufacturers will be seized and converted by Energy Force to build Electric, Hydrogen fuel cell cars.
The use of Gasoline and petroleum-based fuels will be outlawed and replaced by Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2014.
All troops and diplomats withdrawn from middle east and oil war areas by 2014.
My Presidency will legalize marijuana and scientifically exploit all industrial aspects of this plant.
US Energy Force will be responsible for all of the nation’s energy needs, there will no longer be an open market for energy and power, as this will be the sole area of focus for new Force.
Under this authority, all Power companies (Consolidated Edison, etc…) will become the property of the Energy Force. Wind Generators will be constructed nationwide and offshore where wind abound.Solar arrays, wave farms, all viable alternative sources of Energy will be studied and used.
All teenage students who wish to get a vehicle when they turn 14 may join the Energy Force as early as 10 years old. All Americans who wish to own a vehicle for personal use, must do work for Energy Force to earn a vehicle and a license.
All roads and highways in this country will be outfitted for autopilot as there will be 0 tolerance for automobile accidents, deaths, injuries, etc.
All transportation to be computer controlled and free for all who join Energy Force.
The new jobs in all areas of converting and maintaining new transportation systems will generate millions of jobs. All Commercial and private transportation will be regulated by Energy Force.
In our country, all citizens will be provided with free transportation for any purpose as long as they are a contributing reservist in the Energy Force.

The Energy Force will be set up like conventional military with schools, housing, basic training, full health benefits, recruiting offices and facilities for public education.
Once one joins Energy Force they are a member of that branch of the armed forces until they wish to stop driving or using energy.
Every Us Citizen will be eligible to join the Energy Force, including those who are in jail. It is hoped that many can be released to work towards building new American Energy plan.

Everyone in this country can contribute to a greener country, those who are too old or too feeble to work will be given classes in how to conserve. A Big part of the Energy Force will be using today’s youth to be involved with our elders and disabled in community programs promoting Energy Independence.

The Energy force will take us out of our troubles and fix things as they should be.
The United States will be free of many bad things if you elect me:
No more electric bills, gas bills, transportation worries ( all who join Energy Force earns vehicle)
No more traffic accidents ( Road network fixed with Autopilot interface stripes in pavement)
No more highway noise zones near neighborhoods (hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are quiet and clean)
No more failing US Auto Companies, Failing Airlines
No more war for oil ( hopefully no more U.S. bullying of oil countries, thus less terrorism etc… World Peace?)
No more oil dependency,Greenhouse gases, stupid arrests for Cannabis, military relying on taxes for funding, national deficit, debt to foreign countries, uninsured Americans, or threats to destroy pristine wilderness areas for obsolete oil below surface.

With America following this plan we can live in friendship with our Neighbor’s and hopefully start sharing our vast food resources and technology with less fortunate nations. Without the expense for energy the average American will have more spendable income. This will boost our economy.
Imagine living in a world where you can get in your vehicle, tell it where to go, and all for free ( While puffing a Govt. sanctioned blunt), on your way to work building/operating/or maintaining a Govt. Energy facility! This is what I stand for, If you agree with me, please vote me me Dave Adam for President of The United States of America, Thank you.
You Can vote for me by writing me in in November, I promise if you are for one of the others running, I will use everyone’s help , even theirs.
Dave Adam

Which Type of Vacation Would You Choose?

November 21st, 2010

I am trying to find out which type of vacation most people like. Here are the basic points for both. Please let me know which one you would like to go on and why. Thanks!

Vacation #1:
*Medium size private catamaran sailing yacht where you get your own room with queen size bed and private bathroom
*Public areas on yacht include large outdoor seating and dining area, large indoor seating and dining area and spaces to lay out in the sun.
*Includes small water taxi service to and from destinations around the town/harbor.
*Located in a town you want to visit or an island
*Limited showering available due to having only 10 gallons per day to shower with
*Limited power available – no hair dryers, but you can recharge your phone
*Space is slightly smaller than Vacation #2
*You can go sailing on this boat if you pay a little extra
*No water toys aside from snorkels and floats – most of your fun will be exploring town, riding bicycles, swimming and other activities ashore or at the beach, rather than right at the yacht.
*Limited air conditioning and heating capability. On a chilly night, you grab an extra blanket.
*Very quiet aboard

Vacation #2:
*Larger size private power yacht where you get your own room with queen size bed and private bathroom
*Public areas on yacht include large outdoor seating and dining area, large indoor seating and dining area and spaces to lay out in the sun.
*Includes small water taxi service to and from destinations around the town/harbor.
*Located in a town you want to visit or an island
*Showering is more available because boat has more water storage. However, still can’t stand there zoning out while showering. It is a boat.
*Unlimited power with hair dryers OK, use as much electricity as you want.
*Entire boat is slightly larger than vacation #1
*You can go out on a cruise, but it’ll cost you about 0/hr.
*Full control of the temperature of your room like you have in a hotel.
*Toys include: Floats, tubing (behind water taxi boat), sea kayaks, small lazer or sunfish sailboat, snorkeling gear and bicycles.
*Not as quiet as vacation #1 because there is often a generator running to make all the power and hot water

Vacation #1 is a boat that is designed to be a superb sailing catamaran, so it is light on comforts. Vacation #2 is a large power boat that is designed only for your comfort and fun.

Which would you choose and why???

Thanks!!

most portable/quietest generator with between 2000 and 3000 CONTINUOUS Watts?

November 8th, 2010

I am a photographer that is looking to make my studio lighting kit portable. The manual states that I need a generator that provides at least 2000W continuous power. What is the smallest, quietest generator for sale? (If possible I would prefer a unit made in America or Western Europe)

As a senior citizen which small generators have you found to be the best over time?

October 30th, 2010

I’m told we will have a hard winter here in the northwest and I’m thinking a small quiet generator with an easy start would be best for me if the power goes out for a few days.
This is my first experience with an all electric house.
What should look for?

Will sound interfere its own travel?

October 15th, 2010

If i set up 2 speakers. pointing directly toward each other. both making the same noise at the same time. Will the sound waves hit as they cross paths and cancel one another to any degree? Or is the same amount of sound sent the same distance in both directions as if i played only one? What is the most effective way to cancel sound via baffles, soft surface, a jagged or smooth surface? with out excessive foam or insulation. and light weight unlike dynamite. do cupped shapes and rounded edges break up sound better than sharp ones? I’m thinking of making my own muffler for a generator it doesn’t need to flow for high performance. i just want it quiet, light weight, and to hold up to the heat.

What type of backup generator is needed for an operating room?

October 10th, 2010

which is better, a propane or gas powered portable electric generator?

Is World Record the most underrated album in Van der Graaf Generator's oeuvre, or what?

October 4th, 2010

Of course, there isn’t a single VDGG album that I wouldn’t give a perfect rating (besides maybe The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome, but…that was by Van der Graaf, not Van der Graaf Generator. There’s a slight difference), but World Record, more-so than all their others, besides maybe the Aerosol Grey Machine, seems to get a lot of flack.
I think "Meurglys III" is one of the best epics Peter Hammill’s ever written, and "Wondering" could’ve easily been a gratifying hit single.

What do you think?

BQ: Favorite VDGG album?
BQ2: Favorite pH solo album?
BQ3: Favorite VDGG song?
BQ4: Favorite pH solo song?

can you run a boat's generator into the water to quiet the sound?

September 29th, 2010

I was thinking about taking a large pontoon boat (28-30 footer) and making it such that I could camp on it with my family. It would be great to take my generator with us, but the muffler would be too loud. Would it be possible to retrofit the generator (3500 running watt) to pipe its exhaust down under the water line like boat motors do?

My article is about game cultures, this article talks about how the cultural forces active in game production from three aspects: the economic system, the system of technology and the system of culture.
First of all, it gives some examples to show us the trend for computer games and PlayStation’s development. For example, Sony are major operators in the music and film business, but they are also produce PlayStation for many years. The Sony PSX enables the user to play PS2 games, record TV, copy audio, watch DVDs and connect online.
Beside Sony, Microsoft produce digital product as well. This article indicates that, Bill Gates and his work teams produced Xbox because Microsoft were very threatened by Sony dominance of the domestic digital domain, and computer games business is a powerful revenue generator within the global media and entertainment industries.
Recent technology releases have intensified the drive towards game platforms converging with other forms of media use. Kutaragi the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment predicted of the PS3: “The next-generation PlayStation will probably take the form of a game box, though it will not be a mere game machine.” In early 2004 Microsoft released the Xbox Music mixer designed to expand the Xbox capabilities from DVD, online connectivity, and audio to karaoke performance. There was a competition between Microsoft and Sony to produce their next consoles. Microsoft have spent millions of dollars to get the Xbox 360 to market before the PS3.

This article also gives a statistics to show us that the games we get are generated by a highly sophisticated, highly capitalized media industry. When you buy a new console game, about 35% of the cover price of a console game goes back to the publisher and developer;as much as 30% stays with the retailer, 10% to the wholesaler and a further 10% on marketing, a final unique 15% on each disc is paid as a royalty to the platform manufacturer, like Sony or Microsoft. The 35% that returns to game publishers and producers there is both a cost and profit component, split roughly 50/50. Because of the longer established and more economically successful than any other digital media sector, more and more Media Studies scholars attend to the games industry.
This article talks about the economic system of game production from three parts, the developers, the publishers and the technologists.
First of all,
It describes the developers’ working environment: an open plan office, filled with young men hooked up to computers, many of them wearing headphones, an air of quiet concentration is broken by the occasional whoop of success. The phone almost never rings; communication is by text or email. Lunch is either sandwiches or cheese toasts. They don’t need to dress up. Their working environment seems more relaxed than any other creative media environment. This might look like it is only a description of a culture; but this culture is a function of economics. Because of such a working environment is in fact a highly systematized form of a new kind of global media enterprise.

(I haven’t finish it yet, i have a presentation tmr afternoon, i am so nervous~ :-( )

Why can't this woman 'Get Her Dang Guns Back'?

April 22nd, 2010

If you were a) jacked up, b) held at gunpoint, or c) politely asked to hand over your firearm as you a) left town, b) went about your business or c) tried to help your neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, you might be eligible to get your illegally confiscated gun back if you follow the rules established by the court. According to the terms of the permanent injunction against the city, issued in October 2008, the city has to “make an aggressive attempt to return any and all firearms which may have been confiscated during the period August 29 to December 31, 2005.” You can access the information at the city’s webpage. Scroll to the bottom of the page on the right hand side and click the little red box that reads “Hurricane Katrina Firearms.”

According to Assistant City Attorney Victor L. Papai, as of last October only three applicants had turned in paperwork to get their guns back. Papai does not return calls any longer regarding the tally. The city does not have their guns and it only has to comply with the court order until October 2010.

Local tavern owner JoAnn Guidos is one of those applicants. She owns Kajun’s Pub on St. Claude Avenue and boasts that her establishment “never closes” and that people feel safe there because they know that Guidos knows how to use firearms. During the aftermath of Katrina, she kept the pub open for two weeks, running generators and serving ice-cold beer and hot grilled food to the neighborhood, press and visiting law enforcement. Meanwhile, around her, shooters and looters, along with law enforcement, used St. Claude Avenue as the only highway to and from the Lower 9th Ward.

She said, “I didn’t want to evacuate because I didn’t want people to break in and destroy this place. And that’s what happened. They were breaking into houses and then, setting them on fire.” She recalled, “We had firemen and policemen from all over the country here and I told them I was armed and that this was a safe house and they didn’t do nothing. They had no problem. Then, the U.S. Marshals came walking down the street.”

On September 8, 2008, Guidos and friends decided to leave New Orleans. Things had quieted down with the arrival of federal troops, but heat and humidity stayed high. So, since there was no power restored yet to her building, she decided it would be safe to lock the bar and head to Mississippi. While loading the van in front of the bar, she carried her Browning 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun and wore a .38 in her belt. Five U.S. Marshals came driving down St. Claude and stopped half a block away from the pub. They got out of their vehicle and came running toward Guidos and crew with M-16s, yelling “Put the guns down!” Guidos said, “They went right after me. They said to put my hands on the car and then, asked if I had any other guns.” She gave them her other guns and asked for a receipt. They never showed any ID, and they never gave her a receipt.

The scenario gets complicated because one of Guidos’ employees, unbeknownst to her at the time, is a convicted felon and she had loaned him a .25 semi-auto to wear. When the Feds ran the ID checks, they discovered this fact and cuffed the employee and took him away. However, Guidos said the employee only had one of her guns on him, and reiterated, she carried two of them and had packed two of them in the van. The charges against her employee were dismissed in July 2006, in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Louisiana.

On November 12, 2008, Guidos filed paperwork to get her five guns back and hand-delivered it to a sergeant at a police station on Earhart in New Orleans. By January 2009, when she had not heard anything, she contacted Holliday. He contacted Papai, who told Holliday that he [Papai] already had contacted Guidos by phone and by letter. Holliday then sent Guidos a copy of the letter that Papai claimed to have sent her, dated Oct. 24, 2008 – supposedly written to her three weeks before she turned in her claims. Guidos said, “I found it rather odd that the letter they sent to me in response to my forms was written a month before I turned in my forms.” She says he never called her.

Futhermore, she believes she is caught between two systems: the local police department and the federal law enforcement system. She continued, “This is the question I put to Dan and nobody can give me an answer: Where are my damn guns?

“My weapons were taken by the U.S. Marshals, and supposedly they were in federal custody and I was verbally told that the Feds transferred the weapons to New Orleans, but I cannot find out who transferred them and who received them. … There’s paperwork there somewhere that someone signed for. If I can get a copy of the transfer order, than I can at least either get my weapons back and/or the value back of the weapons [value approx. ,000].”

When asked about Guidos’ predicament, Holliday responded: “I don’t have any information regarding Guidos. Because her situation inv
When asked about Guidos’ predicament, Holliday responded: “I don’t have any information regarding Guidos. Because her situation involved a gun seized as evidence it does not fall under our consent judgment, even now that the charges were dismissed.”
